Alfred

Rosenthal

Obituary

Alfred Rosenthal, 92, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and caregivers on Thursday, (February 7, 2013) at his home. He was the beloved husband of the late Hilda (Veroff) Rosenthal for 55 years. A life long native of Hartford, he was the son of the late Isadore and Mollie (Sklar) Rosenthal. Al attended Weaver High School and was a graduate of Bentley College in 1940. Early in Al’s accounting career, he partnered with Julius (Yuddy) Shapiro, forming the firm of Shapiro Rosenthal. They continued their partnership which evolved into BlumShapiro in 1980, which currently is the largest accounting firm based in the New England. Al loved his profession and was so very proud to be affiliated with a firm he considered to be part of his family, until his retirement in 1988. He was highly regarded as a prominent CPA in the area with a keen and respected business sense in addition to being the ultimate gentleman, with a warm personality and infectious smile; intellectual curiosity and an unwavering sense of humor. Al served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He held many key positions as an active life long board member and volunteer for the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford, Beth El Temple; and a member of the West Hartford Regents. He enjoyed spending time with his wide circle of life-long friends in Hartford and Florida, golfing, playing tennis, bridge and dining at his beloved Max Restaurants. Al’s greatest enjoyment was undoubtedly being a devoted father and “Zaide,” with his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law: David and Judy of Hartford, Edward and Winsome of Fairfield and Richard and Vicki of West Hartford. In addition he leaves his six cherished grandchildren: Max, Jacob, Molly, Emily, Julia and Hannah; his sister-in-law, Bernice Veroff, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his loving sister Judy (Rosenthal) Kaplan and her husband, Nathan Kaplan, Joseph and Jody Veroff and Harold Veroff . The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge his extraordinary caregivers: Delcita Smith, Icyline Cassells, Florette Collins and Shirley Bryan and Dr. Ava Pannullo of Hebrew Healthcare.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 in the Sanctuary of Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Jackson St. Ext., Avon immediately followed by a reception at Beth El Temple where the family will receive relatives and friends until 3:30 PM. Shiva will be held Tuesday evening at the home of Vicki and Richard Rosenthal, 79 Balfour Drive, West Hartford from 7:00-9:00 PM with services at 7:30 PM. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial contributions may be made to The Alfred and Hilda Rosenthal Family Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation, 333 Bloomfield Ave., Suite D, West Hartford, CT 06117. Arrangements are entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary. For further information, directions, or to sign the guest book for Al please visit online at www.weinsteinmortuary.com/funerals.cfm.

Al was simply a wonderful, kind and thoughtful man. My brothers I will never forget invaluable counsel and generosity he showed to my Mother when my Dad passed away and we were very young. As I grew older I learned that was just the way that Al lived his long and loving life.

May his memory live on as a blessing his entire family for the many generations to come.

I was sorry to learn of your dad’s passing. He was such a wonderful man whom I had the privilege of knowing for many years. He was always friendly and interested in what I was doing personally and professionally. I remember visiting my Uncle Yuddy, Aunt Ann and their children on Magnola Hill. The Shapiros and Rosenthals had adjacent backyards, which made a terrific place for all the youngsters to play. Your dad and Yuddy were such good friends and partners. I later worked part time at Shapiro, Rosenthal on Farmington Avenue many years ago and enjoyed the warm and stimulating environment they created there. Al was always positive and had such a warm smile. He touched many lives, and I am glad that I got to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear David, Rich, Ed, and families, please accept our sincere condolences on Al's passing. Anne and I didn't know him very long, but he was one of the finest men I have ever met, and his character was such that I felt like I had known him my entire life. He had a great love for you and spoke to me many times about that love, and his joy in your successes. I loved his sense of humor! Someone once said "God gave us memories so we would have roses in winter". I know you have a huge beautiful garden of them. May your blessings continue in his memory. Earle and Anne Stone

During the twelve years I worked with Al Rosenthal I found him to be unfailingly a gentleman who maintained a healthy perspective on office matters.  He was a professional, but he was a humane and thoughtful person first and foremost.  Although it's been several years since I've seen him, I will miss him.

My heartfelt condolences to Rich, Vicki, Emily, Hannah and Julia upon hearing this sad news. I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Rosenthal through my work with the Max Restaurant Group. Al, as he was known to his friends, was a kind, patient and thoughtful man. He represented a generation where a gentleman was a gentleman in the truest sense of the word - classy, courteous and well-read. He was a terrific listener, too. Glad I had the opportunity to know him. Even gladder I could call him a friend. Sean Maloney
