Barbara

Bard

Obituary

Dr. Barbara Bard, longtime Professor at Central Connecticut State University and resident of West Hartford, passed away after a long illness on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1934 the younger daughter of Jack and Rose Fink, Dr. Bard attended Tilden High School in East Flatbush, Brooklyn and then received her B.A. from Brooklyn College. Following her undergraduate studies, she received her Masters Degree from The University of Michigan and then a Ph.D. from New York University. She taught briefly in the Connecticut public school system before embarking on a distinguished academic career as a professor, in the Department of Special Education first at Central Connecticut State College and then Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Connecticut. She developed a national reputation as an educator of graduate students interested in teaching children with learning disabilities. As well as becoming an authority on how to help children who were speech delayed, she was proudly active in many areas of campus life, including the American Association of University Professors, where she held leadership roles for her fellow members. She was also active in The Connecticut Speech Language Hearing Association as well as the American Speech Hearing Association, serving in several leadership roles and being honored with numerous awards for her service. She was an enthusiastic traveler, having been posted to Pakistan and Argentina in the 1960s in connection with her husband’s work for the Agency for International Development. She continued her interest in international travel and public service by working extensively in speech and hearing clinics both domestically, including as the Supervisor of Speech Language Pathology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, as well as consulting for the Karachi American School, The Junior English School in Rome, for Partners of the Americas in Brazil, and in the Bahamas as part of a Caribbean Initiative Grant. Upon her retirement from academe, she took a job as the first director of the Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Care Center at Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. After establishing and running the clinic for four years, she worked as an educational consultant, becoming the External Coordinator for a federal grant that sought in improve literacy rates in the Hartford public schools. Her last position, appropriately enough, was doing what she most loved professionally, helping children with learning disabilities at the Grace Webb School at the Institute for Living at Hartford Hospital. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer, a law school professor in Texas, her son Eli, an attorney in New York, her daughter-in-law Elizabeth; her granddaughter Madeline; her sister Elinor Klingher, and many more close friends and family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to B’Nai Tikvoh Shalom (www.btsonline.org) or the Connecticut Speech Language Hearing Association (www.ctspeechhearing.org). Services will be held at 1 p.m., on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at Weinstein’s Mortuary. Hi Eli --

My condolences on your loss. Your mom was always pleasant; I think she was the most erudite parent among all my high school acquaintances.

I wish her peace.

I have the fondest memories of Barbara as mentor and friend while I was on faculty at Central Conn. State Univ. She had a delightful personality, saw the irony and humor in situations, and was the consummate academician and professional which she manifested with compassion. My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to all her family and friends.

Barbara is among the best people I have known. In the 70's, while we worked together on a multi-year project at Long Lane School, I came to regard her as everybody's mother: a woman capable of teaching and improving virtually anyone who came in contact with her, who could and did love everyone (except those she thought cruel), and who saw right past the faults of others, found the good that was always in there someplace, and encouraged them. When most of us looked at the (juvenile delinquent) residents of Long Lane and saw very scary children, Barbara saw only children, perfectly worthy of her love and support. She would describe them as funny or cute or clever, and would work and advocate for them as if they were her own. Only later did I realize that such was her way with everyone, even me.

I have not had much contact with Barbara over the past dozen years or so, but hardly a month goes by that I don't think about her and the things I learned from her. She will always remain among my most unforgettable characters, and most cherished friends.

Much love and thoughts to Jennifer, Eli and families. Your Mom was definitely one of the "cooler" older cousins growing up. Sorry I could not be there with you today. --Dan (& Susan)

Barbara was funny and smart and compassionate - and she made me want to be better every time I was with her - a better friend, a better mother, better teacher, clinician, and colleague. She had that effect. I cherish the hours we spent together doing work for CSHA, ASHA, traveling to Brazil, or just chatting. I still have several of her beautiful drawings and prints - just one more of her many talents! Jennifer and Eli, you were the world to her; my heart is with you and certainly with Madeleine who had just a short time to know this incredible grandmother!

Jennifer and Eli, may you find comfort in knowing how much Judy and I admired Barbara and enjoyed spending time with her and the both of you in years past. Barbara's humor, her sharing of fascinating adventures, and her brilliance in matters related to the profession and other matters resulted in people from all walks of life seeking her company. Barabara's passion for social justice led her to study and reveal through her grants and writing the needs of underserved children and young adults with serious learning and language disabiliies. Her leadership in the American Speech-Language Hearing Association, as President of both the Connecticut Speech-Language Hearing Association and the Connecticut Speech and Hearing Foundation speaks to the respect, confidence, and admiration Barbara held among speech-language pathologists and audiologists. Her voice and her mind will be missed. I have lost a dear friend and mentor. Shalom Barbara

It was a blessing to know Barbara as a mentor, a colleague, and a friend. Her insights and advice made a difference to me all along the way. At the Webb Schools, where we first met, she rarely acted without first considering the ramifications of her actions for her students and their families. Barbara worried about everything vis-a-vis her charges - from manners, vocabulary development, nutrition, access to technology, and more. Barbara was a grand and great lady and a dear friend who will be sorely missed. Sincerely, Beth Ann Sennett

My cousin Barbara will be missed and although it had been too many years in-between visits I cherished all the time spent with her. She was my inspiration for me a obtaining a speech and hearing degree. The family that Barbara and I come from is large and the difference in our ages made it more like an aunt/niece relationship
But her warm and genuine interest in me made me feel special. Something hard to obtain when there were so many exceptional people in such a large Brood. Its said my Dad saved her life a long time ago when a very young girl inquisitive in all things caught on fire. Thanks Dad for letting Barbara touch my life and so many others

As the fortunate parent of one of the many children with learning disabilities that Barbara helped, I was awed by her dedication, her inventive and creative treatment modes, and, most importantly, her love and encouragement for my son, Peter, from the age of 3 1/2 through his college graduation and current employment. As an adult, Peter loved Barbara's annual lunches where she enjoyed hearing about all of his most recent accomplishments. He, and all of us in our family, will be forever grateful for all the doors Barbara has opened for him.

We send our warmest condolences to all of Dr. Bard's family.

Dr. Bard stands in my memory as an astonishing academic & activist leader among her colleagues at Grace Webb School, at The Institute of Living.

Dr. Bard servrd as our Speech Therapist, but she also was a support to her friends and colleageus, someone you could bounce ideas off of. She was an expert resource for us regarding speech and language diagnoses and on educational interventions for persons with physical and learning disabilities. She was a person the kids enjoyed working with.

Most of all, Dr. Bard was a tremendous advocate for our children. She would advocate for their needs, whether it would be through programming, communication with staff members, in work with parents, and with the children themselves.

Dr. Bard was a blessing in our lives, and we will miss her.

I was fortunate to be Director of the Webb Schools when Barbara began working with our children. What an extraordinary clinician and....what a beautiful person! I thoroughly enjoyed as well as respected Barbara. I feel that we who knew her were blessed. She was a gift to so many people. I will treasure her memory.

I was associated with Barbara for many years through CSHA. We traveled to conventions together, shared hotel rooms, and met at her lovely home. I will always remember her as a woman of many talents who gave generously of herself, but most of all, as a wise and caring friend.
My thoughts are with Jennifer, Eli and all of her family.

Barbara treated me like a second daughter. She took me on my first trip to New York where I had dim sum for the first time! We had gone shopping with Eli for his first work suits together and many other fond memories. She loved her children deeply and I know she will be missed by them. We will miss you Barbara. Thank you for the footprints you left in the sand of my life.

Dear Jenny & Eli,

I am so sorry to hear of your mom's death. I have so many wonderful childhood memories of her and all of you, from our times playing, sleeping over, and summer trips up to your place in New Hampshire (freezing cold creek water & crawfish figure prominently too!) Your mom was the only mom I knew who could rival my mom's hollers - but in the most loving way.

I can't attend tomorrow, but I will be thinking of you both.

Love, Sarah (Glater) Abercrombie
