Dr. Barry Steckler, 75, died on Tuesday November 21, 2023, at his home surrounded by his loving family, following his long battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joanne Ernest, his daughters Lindsay and Caitlin and his son, Stuart.
Barry was born and raised in New York City the son of Dr. Julius Steckler, a general practitioner, and Mrs. Flora Steckler, a teacher. Barry and his younger brother Stuart both attended Little Red School House and Elizabeth Irwin Schools in New York City. He graduated college from the University of Rochester, NY before attending medical school in Lausanne, Switzerland and University of Texas, San Antonio, graduating with a Doctor of Medicine 1975.
During his residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI he met his future wife, Joanne who was a registered nurse at the same hospital. Barry and Joanne married in 1978 and moved to Connecticut.
Barry had a private medical practice in New Britain, CT for 40 years. Where he cared for generations of families. When he wasn’t practicing medicine, he enjoyed cartooning, writing fiction, traveling, playing tennis, reading, and spending time with his family. He was an avid sports fan and and rooted for Uconn women and men’s basketball and the Detroit Tigers.
Barry will be remembered as a devoted family man, a caring and attentive medical practitioner, and an ardent Pittsburg Steelers fan. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and the community he served.
A memorial will be held in his honor on April 5, 2024 from 1-2:30pm at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave. Hartford, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Prostate Cancer Foundation, pcf.org.
