Benson Jay Horowitz M.D. passed away February 12, 2024 following a short illness.
Benson was born May 17th 1934, in Philadelphia PA to Louis and Anne Horowitz. He was considered an excellent student and graduated from Central High School in Philadelphia as the Valedictorian. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania undergraduate where he developed a new class of drugs which were tested and marketed in Europe. He then attended the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, following graduation from medical school he specialized in Obstetrics and Gynecology and settled in Hartford, CT. He was one of the founding members of S.H.E. Medical Group in Hartford, was an attending at Mt. Sinai Hospital, St. Francis Hospital and Hartford Hospital and a Clinical Professor at the University of Connecticut Medical School. He was a sought after lecturer in his field and had lectured around the world and published a book about his specialized field of study. He served his patients diligently and with great care and is remembered fondly by those he brought into this world or cared for through his almost 50 years of practice.
Benson fulfilled his 2 year military obligation as a Lieutenant Commander physician at Navy Memphis in Millington, Tennessee.
He was a very active member at the Beth Hillel Synagogue in Bloomfield, CT and had been a past president of the synagogue. In his later years he was a congregant at the Emanuel Synagogue in West Hartford, CT where he is remembered as a faithful member of the morning minyan.
He is also remembered by his family. He was a loving husband of 67 years to his wife Marcia Horowitz, brother to Faith Braverman, father to Barry Horowitz and Nancy Horowitz and grandfather to David Horowitz, Sarah Horowitz and Jane Namenwirth.
Benson loved his summers in Ogunquit, ME, often riding his bicycle up and down the hills of Maine. His children and grandchildren loved going to the Ogunquit beach with Benson and Marcia spending their days in the sun and sea under their watchful eyes.
His presence will be sorely missed.
Funeral services will be Sunday, February 18th at 1 PM at The Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford, CT. Internment will follow at the Beth Hillel Synagogue Memorial Park, 80 Wolcott Road, East Granby, CT.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Emanuel Synagogue, Torah Restoration Fund.
