Carol (Paschkes) Robbin, 81, of West Hartford, Connecticut, passed away early Monday morning, February 26, 2024. Carol was born and raised in Greenfield, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Max and Eva Paschkes, Jewish immigrants who arrived in Massachusetts to escape the Holocaust and start their lives in America. Carol helped raise her younger sister, Charlotte, after their mother passed away at a young age. She worked a factory job all through school to help support the family. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she studied to be a teacher. After graduating from UMass, she then moved to Hartford, Connecticut where she taught in the Hartford Public School system for many years as both an elementary classroom teacher and teaching English language learners. In April, 1967, she married Harvey Robbin. Together, they moved to West Hartford where they raised their family and have remained for nearly 60 years.
Carol was the primary caregiver for her three children and was very involved in their schooling and activities. As her children grew up, she went back to teaching at the CT Science Museum preschool. She adored spending time with her friends and family and, as she told everyone she met, she was lucky to have all 7 of her grandchildren in Connecticut.
Carol loved spending time at Stannard Beach with her extended family and summer friends. She also loved to travel, was a voracious reader, and loved to see plays at the Hartford Stage Company, Theatreworks, the Bushnell and on Broadway with Harvey always at her side. Harvey and Carol were true partners in life. They spent their Saturday nights with friends and traveled the world together. They hosted dozens of family holidays and celebrations and always made sure there were spaces for extra guests for Carol’s incredible cooking. Carol took great pride in her family and was a dedicated and loyal friend to many. “Nana” loved watching her grandchildren grow. When they were young, she would read to them for hours and enjoy their time together at the beach house. As her grandchildren grew, she continued to be their biggest supporter as she cheered them on from the auditorium, sidelines and theater seats.
She is survived by her three children: EJ Greenspan and her husband, Steven of West Hartford; Andy Robbin and his wife, Katie of Avon; and Hillary Grogan and her husband, Sean of Riverside; her seven grandchildren: Simon, Seth, Eva, Georgia, Ramona, Gwynnie and Malcolm. She is also survived by her sister, Charlotte Hartwell of Morris Plains, New Jersey.
A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, February 28. The family will be sitting shiva following the service at the home of EJ and Steven Greenspan. Memorial donations may be made to either the Ellen Jeanne Goldfarb Memorial Charitable Trust at PO Box 945, Farmington, CT 06034-0945 Attn: Mary Elder or to The Foundation for West Hartford Public Schools at www.fwhps.org, 50 S.
