Nana, thank you for your unconditional love. I miss you so much, but am grateful for the time we got to spend together. Thank you for passing on your love of literature, learning, and life to me - I am forever appreciative. Love, Sam
Edith was born on July 19, 1932 to Suzanne and Solomon Chaftan and grew up in the Bronx. She and Herman lived in the same apartment building and knew each other as children. After graduating as valedictorian from Evander Childs High School, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa at Hunter College. Fluent in French and Spanish, she worked at the French Embassy in New York City. A devoted mother, she stayed home to raise her three children and later obtained a Masters of Library Science from Columbia University. Edith launched her second career, first as a librarian at Frisch School yeshiva in Paramus, NJ, and then as a research specialist with the American Association of Advertising Agencies. An early enthusiast of internet technology, she specialized in information management until retiring in her early 70s.
Passionate about literature, Edith read omnivorously. She and Herman were travel enthusiasts, eagerly exploring the US and countries around the world, including frequent trips to Edith’s ancestral roots in France. She enjoyed gourmet cooking, the arts, sailing, and an interesting conversation. All who knew her greatly admired Edith’s unflagging kindness and devotion to her family.
Edith will be dearly missed by her husband, her three children, Stephanie Fischer, Anne Ziffer Welsh and David Ziffer as well as by her eight grandchildren, Pam, Rory, Sam, and Tom Fischer, Zach and Jake Welsh, and Zoe and Niko Ziffer.

I am honored to have known Edith and to call her my friend. She was warm and welcoming and made me feel like family. When I first came to Connecticut I didn't know anyone but I got to know the Fischer family and was lucky to spend many happy times with Edith. She was funny and entertaining and a great conversationalist. I will miss her laugh and her kindness and her zest for life and learning. She is an inspiration to all of us who knew her. She will be sadly missed and I send my deepest condolences. My thoughts are with you at this difficult time.

Edith will be missed deeply by everyone who knew her. Her wit, intelligence, warmth, compassion and beauty are qualities much needed today and our world is greatly diminished by her absence. May we all strive to emulate her in our lives and continue her legacy into the future.

Edith - a woman with a wonderful spirit and zest for life housed in a humble, generous and loving personality. Thank you for sharing a wonderful dance with me at Anne and Joe's wedding. You are missed by us all - especially by your wonderful family.

It is through Edith's daughter Anne that I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with this lovely, gracious lady. We shared many laughs and misadventures while watching Anne's twins together in Atherton for a few days some years ago. And it was then that I experienced her culinary talents as well as her grace. My daughter Kyrsten had already enjoyed her hospitality while interviewing in NYC, and she also is saddened by the departure of such a special spirit. Together we send our sympathies to her family. Love Sandra & Kyrsten
