Ernest White of West Hartford and Bloomfield died Saturday, January 26, 2008. Born in Quincy, MA, November 15, 1918, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Gertrude (Dubitsky) White. He moved to Hartford in 1920 and graduated Weaver High School in 1936. He attended Trinity College Class of 1940, and was active in track, soccer, and recipient of freshman math prize. He owned and operated two restaurants with his family, ?Whites Ice Cream Stores? on Albany Ave. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet after Pearl Harbor. As Communications Officer he was assigned to the Nashville Air Base to direct radio and navigation training for Ferrying Division, and in 1944 was chosen as Director of Training for flight crews in greatly expanded program at Reno, Nevada for Worldwide Air Transport Command. In 1945 he received personal commendations from the commanding generals of both the ATC and the Ferrying Division referring to his ?outstanding leadership, ingenious efforts and originality in solving complex problems confronting field activities?, and these led to the award of the Air force Medal for Military Merit. He retired from Army in 1946 as Captain. For six years he owned and operated Freda Farms Restaurant in Newington. In 1950 he developed a process for preserving root vegetables and fruits, and established White Way Potato Co. and Highland Food Corp. with plants in Hartford for over twenty years. As a licensed Real Estate Broker, he owned and managed apartment buildings in the Hartford area from 1963 to 1981. He joined Connecticut Packing Co (COPACO) of Bloomfield in 1972, retiring in 1991 as Corporate Controller. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Purchasing Manager of CT National Association of P.M., and a member of AARP. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Janice (Nussman) White, daughter Shari W. Keith and her husband Thomas Keith of Phoenix, AZ, son Eric D. White and his wife Bobbi of Colchester; and four grandchildren: Brewster & Huntington Keith and Melissa & Bryan White. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 31st, 2008 at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi Jeffrey Bennett officiating.
