Obituary

Florence Post, age 81, of West Hartford, died peacefully on Monday November 13, 2017 with her children by her side, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Philip Post for 59 years. Florence was born in Kovno, Lithuania in 1936 to Irving & Dr. Lea Newman. She survived the Holocaust and arrived in America In 1949. She graduated Wilby High School in Waterbury, received her bachelor’s degree from the Teachers College of Connecticut, and received a Master’s in education from the University of Hartford. She taught at the J.P. Vincent School in Bloomfield and later had a career in Real Estate. Florence was a hidden child in the Holocaust. As a child she was imprisoned with her mother and siblings in the Kovno ghetto. In 1944, her mother escaped with her from the Ghetto. A Lithuanian couple took her and her sister in, and hid them on their farm until the end of the war. Florence spoke about her childhood experiences to school groups. She wanted to educate people about the consequences of intolerance and discrimination. She felt that we would have a better world based on mutual respect and love, and not HATE. The focus of Florence’s life was her family. She loved playing bridge and was an avid gardener. She loved entertaining and preparing her home made specialties. Florence was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Besides her husband Philip, she is survived by her children Michael of Big Bear Lake, CA, her daughter Allison Ghamo and her husband Joe of West Hartford, her son Aron and his wife Jessica of Needham, MA, her brother William Newman and his wife Joan of West Hartford and her sister- in-law Emily Honigberg of Athens, GA. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Max, Joey, Sam and Lana Ghamo, Shelby Post, Teddy and Olivia Post, many nieces and nephews, and the best group of friends that a girl could have. She was predeceased by her sister, Lana Newman. The family would like to express heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Robert Mayer and Dr. Jacob Berchuck (Dana-Farber), Dr. Peter Deckers (UConn) and Rabbi James Rosen. A funeral will be held at Beth El Temple in West Hartford on Thursday November 16th at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at the Beth El Cemetery in Avon. Following interment, the family will receive friends for a meal of condolence back at the Beth El Temple. The family will receive friends in their home in West Hartford on Thursday and Saturday at 7 pm and on Friday from 2-4 pm. Donations in Florence’s honor may be made to the Beth El Temple, Dana Farber Center for Pancreatic and Biliary Cancers, c/o Hillary Repucci, 10 Brookline Place West, Brookline, MA 02445, and Voices of Hope, Farmington, CT. We all started out together in the inaugural year of the Beth El Associate Membership, 1961-62. And most of us stayed at Beth El, and our children knew each other. This is a poignant time with happy memories of the early years, and now this sad time. My heart goes out to you Phil and to your lovely family. (Bob and I got to meet Aron at your home last Spring). My last memory of Florence was at Rosh Hashonah, when Florence greeted me with that smile of hers, and we hugged. I send hugs and love to all of you.

I met Flo when I became a teacher and came to her school many years ago. She was a wonderful teacher and mentor to me. In the years that followed, we became close friends. My children knew that "Auntie Flo"s house was the place to walk to after school before they went to Hebrew School because they would be welcomed and treated to the best snacks ever! Throughout the years, Flo remained a wonderful friend to me and she will be dearly missed.

If one looked up the definitions for courage, grace, and inspiration, surely, there would be a photo of Florence Post. This incredible woman opened up her heart and home to all fortunate enough to know her. And the Kugel-unforgettable. Thank you for enhancing so many lives and for educating us about what really matters-love of family and being grateful for all we have. Love, the Horwitz Family
