Dr. Safalow was the son of the late Anna (Zeisel) and David Safalow of Sunny Isles Beach, FL. He attended schools in The Bronx, NY and graduated from Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1961. He graduated from the New York College of Podiatric Medicine as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine in 1967. Dr. Safalow practiced as a pharmacist and a podiatrist in The Bronx and had been in practice as a podiatrist in Bristol for over 30 years until his forced retirement in 2010 due to illness. He loved his practice and saw his patients as his family members.
He proudly served in the US Army 320th General Hospital Unit as a Specialist 4th Class Mash Unit out of Fort Sam Houston during the Vietnam War.
Dr. Safalow leaves his two loving and devoted caretakers, his wife Dorothy (Novak) Safalow, and his son Adam Safalow of New Britain. He also leaves a son, Dr. Mark Safalow and his family of Rocky Hill; two grandsons; two nephews; and several cousins. He leaves his loving brother, Arthur Safalow and his wife Linda of Syosset, NY and Southold, NY; and two aunts, Priscilla Oberman of Sunrise, FL and Martha Zeisel of Bay Harbor, FL. He was predeceased by his first wife, Marcia (Eskowitz) Safalow, his uncles Irving Oberman and Larry Zeisel, and his aunt and uncle, Pauline and William Young all of Florida.
Dr. Safalow was a kind, gentle and very generous soul with a great sense of humor who loved family, friends, and his Jewish heritage. He was a long time member of B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom in Bloomfield. He loved music, piano playing, art, hiking, theater, opera, gardening, travel and the beaches of Maine, Cape Cod, and Florida. He loved trips to New York City, Florida, art museums, antique shows, antique cars, and the rose gardens at Elizabeth Park in West Hartford.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, April 22, 2013 at the B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom Cemetery, Clubhouse Rd., Windsor. Shiva will be observed at his home, 150 Hyde Rd., West Hartford, Monday following the interment through Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Harold’s name may be made to B’nai Tikvoh-Sholom, 180 Still Rd., Bloomfield 06002 or to the New Britain Museum of American Art, 56 Lexington St., New Britain 06052.
