Helen Weisel earned a B.A. in elementary education from Brooklyn College and taught elementary school in New York City. Later in her career, she earned a Masters degree from Hebrew College. She taught for many years at the Emanuel Synagogue school and served as its principal. Mrs. Weisel served as women’s coordinator of the Chevra Kadisha (Jewish burial society) of Greater Hartford and was active in the Emanuel Synagogue Sisterhood, AMIT, and Parents of North Americans in Israel. She was a volunteer at the Hebrew Home adult day care program and tutored and mentored refugees from the Soviet Union. She was a member of the Emanuel Synagogue, the Young Israel of West Hartford, and the Chabad House of Greater Hartford.
She leaves her children, David Weisel (Barbara) of Potomac, MD; Hillel Weisel (Audra) of Seymour, CT; and Ilana Weisel of Silver Spring, MD; son-in-law, David Eichler of Israel; sister, Ray Oppenheimer (Eric) of Woodmere, NY; nine grandchildren (Maor (Hemdat), Raanan (Hayah), Ari, Noam (Aviv), Gabriel (Abby), Ezra, Jonah, Aden (Brendan), Tova); nine great-grandchildre?n (Rachel, Yoel, Shani, Naama, Itai, Yaara, Yedidyah, Isaac, Judah); and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Aviva Weisel Eichler.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 17 at the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford with interment to follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery,1361 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield.
