Obituary

Dr. Herbert ?Scuts? Basch, 87, of Mohegan Drive, West Hartford died Monday, February 4, 2008 at Hartford Hospital. Born in Hartford, he was the son of the late Frank and Dora (Nevins) Basch. He graduated from local schools including Weaver High School Class of 1938. In 1942 he graduated from the University of Vermont where he was the news and sports editor of the student newspaper. In 1945 Herbert graduated from the Temple University Dental School. He was the first vice-president of the Junior American Dental Association at Temple University. He was also president of the senior class at Temple University. Herbert served in the US Dental Corps in World War II and was discharged with the rank of Captain. For over 40 years he practiced dentistry in the Parkville area of Hartford. He was a past president of the Hartford Dental Society, a past president of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity-Hartford Chapter, a life member of the American Dental Association and the Hartford Dental Society, a member of the Hartford Sick Benefit Association and Beth El Temple of West Hartford. Herbert was a volunteer at Loaves & Fishes in Hartford, and he also volunteered at several dental clinics including the Old Hartford Dispensary, the American School for Deaf and the Hebrew Home & Hospital where he was on staff. He was an umpire for several years in the West Hartford Boys Baseball League. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Barbara ?Bobbe? (Rosenblatt) Basch; two sons, Gary S. Basch and his wife Pamela of Simsbury, and Alan J. Basch and his wife Clarissa of Simsbury; daughter, Robin M. Flatow and her husband Robert of Oakville, Ontario, Canada; grandchildren, Jamie Flatow, Ethan and Talia Basch; step grandchildren, Vanessa Talbott and her husband Steve, Amy Richard and her husband Steve; step great-granddaughters, Ruth and Grace Talbott; sisters, Bernice Tobias of Rockville, MD, and Gloria Weinstein of Washington, DC; and brother, Harold Basch and his wife Wilma of Jacksonville, FL. He was predeceased by his son, Jerrold Basch. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at 11:00 am in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon. A memorial period will be observed at his home, 137 Mohegan Dr., West Hartford Wednesday following the funeral through Friday afternoon.
