With great sadness we announce the passing on July 15, 2023 of Herbert Siegel, 88, of Avon, CT. Herb was a soft-spoken gentle soul with a great smile and a glint of mischief in his eyes. He was proud of his Jewish heritage and was a regular service participant at Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation in Simsbury. He was also a regular at Mohegan Sun where he enjoyed, and was quite good, at the gaming tables.
Herb was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 14, 1943 and was predeceased by his parents Anna Ness Siegel and Benjamin Siegel, as well as his brother and sister. He is survived by his loving wife and companion of thirty-four years, Helen Wu Wong, as well as two sons, Robert Siegel of CT and Peter Siegel of FL, and three grandchildren, Benjamin, Emma, and Rebecca. He is also remembered by relatives and friends all over the country.
Herb graduated from Brooklyn Tech with a bachelor’s degree in structural engineering. He was employed by United Structural Steel and then retired from Hotz Corporation in Avon. Herb also spent some time as a table dealer at Foxwoods Casino. Herb was very proud to have served our country as a soldier in the United States Army during the Korean War era. His interests included racquetball and listening to country & western music.
As regular attendees of Sabbath Services at Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation, Herb and Helen had special seats close to the entrance of the sanctuary so they could greet the other members as they arrived.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 19 at 11:00 AM in the Sanctuary of Farmington Valley Jewish Congregation, 55 Bushy Hill Road, Simsbury, CT with Rabbi Gavi Ruit officiating. Burial will be held at the FVJC Cemetery in Avon, immediately followed by a reception for family and friends back at the synagogue.
Shiva will be held at Herb and Helen’s home on Wednesday and Thursday beginning at 6:30pm with services at 7pm. Donations in memory of Herb may be made to the Herb Siegel/Helen Wong Fund, FBO FVJC, 55 Bushy Hill Rd., Simsbury, CT 06070. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Weinstein Mortuary.
