Joan Berg, 86, died on January 12, 2014 in Hartford, CT. She was born on December 23, 1927, in New York, NY to Morris and Esther Fields. She graduated from The Little Red School House in Manhattan. She attended Oberlin College and New York University (NYU) where she graduated with a degree in Hospital Recreation. It was at NYU that Joan met her husband Gerald (Jerry) Berg. They married in 1950 and moved to Wethersfield, CT shortly thereafter, where their children, Jeff and Michele were born. Joan and Jerry were founding members and officers of Temple Beth Torah in Wethersfield. Joan lived a full and active life and was involved in synagogue affairs, scouting, school organizations, bowling leagues, mah jong groups, and volunteering at Hartford Hospital and literacy organizations.
She is survived by her devoted husband Jerry of West Hartford, son and daughter-in-law Jeff Berg and Debra Paget of Scottsdale, AZ; daughter and son-in-law Michele and Rene Lerer of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; cherished grandchildren Samantha, Lowell, Blake, Ben, and Sam and her sister Judy (Marty) Shor of Chevy Chase, MD and many nephews and nieces.
The family thanks her team of physicians and caregivers at Atria Hamilton Heights in West Hartford, DaVita Dialysis of Bloomfield, and the St. Francis Hospital’s Congestive Heart Failure Unit for their compassionate care and support during the last 19 months.
The funeral service and burial will be held on Sunday January 19th at 10:30 am at Temple Beth Torah Memorial Park in Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Joan’s memory may be directed to Temple Beth Torah, 130 Main St., Wethersfield, CT 06109, or to Foodshare (www.foodshare.org).
