Lawrence B.

Ahrens, M.D.

Obituary

Dr. Lawrence Bernard Ahrens passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 96, on July 15, 2023. Born on July 15, 1927 in New York, Larry was fascinated by anything that piqued his interest. Driven by his thirst for knowledge and a genuine desire to help others, he pursued a career in medicine. After completing his medical degree at the University of Vermont, he embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned several decades of service to the community in New Britain, Connecticut. He specialized in gastroenterology and was widely regarded as a trusted confidant and healer by countless individuals who sought his care. His compassionate approach and ability to connect on a personal level set him apart, providing house calls to his patients long after that practice expired. He left his practice in the late 1970s to be a founding member of the first HMO in Connecticut, taking on the role as Director of Medicine. In addition to his medical career, Larry was an avid yachtsman, pilot, ski instructor, reader, bridge player, news hound, and world traveler. Larry was a devoted family man. He shared a fulfilling life with his wife, Heather, who preceded him in death. He will be remembered as a pillar of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love. Larry cherished spending time with his family, creating lasting memories through vacations, celebrations, and simple moments of togetherness. His gentle spirit and thirst for knowledge were an inspiration to all who knew him. Larry will be profoundly missed by his children: Linda Ahrens (Joe Brouillard), Jeffrey Ahrens (Deborah Young), Andrea Ahrens (Graham Davis), and Heather’s children Jamie Karp Stone, Dale Karp Lehman and Michael Karp. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Ravetch, and his brother, Stephen Richard Ahrens. He will also be lovingly remembered by his collective 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. In addition to his beloved wife, Heather Ahrens, Larry is predeceased by his first wife, Rona Ahrens and his grandson, Lucas Ahrens The family will hold a private celebration of Larry’s life.
