Michael

Suisman

Obituary

Michael Suisman, of West Hartford, Connecticut, passed away at the age of 88 on Nov. 22nd. He is survived by his loving and beloved wife, Elsa Haft Suisman, five children: Douglas (Moye), Joy, Charlie, David and Sherry, 2 stepchildren: Jackie (Carl) and James (Simone) Haft, 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 brothers: Richard (Ingrid) and John (Kathy). His first marriage to Betty Levin ended in divorce and his second wife, Janet Schecter, predeceased him. Mike was the consummate gentleman, loyal and kind. He was an avid skier who loved travel, the arts, fine wine and gardening. After having been graduated from Andover in 1947 and Yale in 1951 he entered and ran the family business, Suisman and Blumenthal, (later to become Aerospace Metal). Under his leadership the business expanded from a local/regional company to one with a national reputation. Michael was Chairman of the Board of The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, The Greater Hartford Jewish Federation, The Hartford Endowment Fund for Public Giving and the Jewish Community Foundation. He also served on the boards of The Hartford Stage Company, Connecticut General, Connecticut Bank and Trust and Hartford Hospital. He was passionate as a philanthropist and well known for his personal generosity and for the significant contributions he raised for not-for-profit institutions. He took great pleasure in broadening their bases of support and often said: “Giving is easy, the hard work is raising money from others.” He was a mainstay and a leader of the Hartford community that felt fortunate to have had him. Services are private. A celebration of his life will be held in the Autorino Hall at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford Connecticut on Thursday, December 1st from 5 to 8 P.M. Contributions in Mike’s memory may be made to The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts, The Greater Hartford Jewish Foundation or the charity of your choice.

I have known the Suisman family since childhood. Michsel's father and my father, Saul Seidman, were roommates at Yale with two other Hartford friends, Edward Pomeranz and Milton Friedman. My father introduced Eddie Suisman to his beloved wife. Etta, who was also a classmate of my father's at Hartford Public High School.

Miichael Suisman was a devoted public servant, combining an outstanding business career, with one of unending charitable and community service.
father imtroduced Eddie to his belove wife whom my dad knew as they were classmates at Hartford Public High School. He lived a long, varied and productive life. My wife, Susan, and I extend our heartfelt sympathies to the entire Suisman family with whom we go back so many years.

Michael Suisman's life was indeed "For a Blessing'

Elsa, My deepest sympathy on the loss of your husband. Those of us who have resided in the area for a long time know his footprints are embedded in the foundation of numerous institutions with which he was affiliated, and his name will long be remembered for having made the greater Hartford community a much better place for so many.

Dear Micheal.
You are one of my hero's and go to know so well when you spent six months at my office after selling your business. You set the best example of real charitable giving when you started the Jewish Community Foundation, Wallenberg Society at the Federation, Your great work at the Wadsworth and the Bushnell, Hartford Foundation and so many other charities. Your Grandparents, the famous Sarah P.Suisman, who exemplified Jewish giving, Your grandfather, Michael, Your parents Ed and Etta, both active at the Federation and Mt. Sinai and your great wife Elsa. What a family. You set the mark for all of us.

We were sad to hear about Michael's passing, especially after talking about him with Richard so recently.
Michael was an exemplary leader, expecting from others the same sense of obligation he felt to care for community.
When Michael creating the Wallenberg Society for leadership gifts at the Jewish Federation, his enthusiasm matched his generous spirit and it gave the campaign a much needed lift. We will miss him, Cindy Chazan and Jay Leipzig.
