Miriam D.

Klau

Obituary

Miriam “Miri” Klau died on Saturday, January 9, 2021, of a drug overdose following a long struggle with addiction, narcolepsy and mental illness. Born in Boston, she was 26. She was the beloved daughter of Dr. Jennifer (Feldman) Klau and the Honorable Daniel J. Klau of West Hartford. Miri had proudly enjoyed more than a year of sobriety before her death and was planning on moving from Los Angeles to Hawaii with her boyfriend, who had taught her how to surf. A graduate of The Bess & Paul Sigel Hebrew Academy (2008) and William Hall High School (2012), Miri was a passionate artist who loved glassblowing and metal work, especially wrought iron. She was a talented musician and vocalist who brought family and friends to tears whenever she performed. Classically trained on piano, Miri also taught herself cello, guitar and saxophone. She loved to paint, create digital art and sketch her friends. To the trepidation of her parents, who lost countless nights of sleep, the adventurous and friendly Miri hitchhiked and train-hopped her way across the United States several times after completing a gap-year program. At times she chose to live on the streets. Ever afterwards she admonished family and friends to show compassion for the homeless. Miri’s friends remember her loving spirit, genuineness and wide-ranging creativity. They recall that, despite her own challenges, Miri always put others’ needs before her own. Miri is survived by her parents, younger siblings Ari and Etan, grandparents David and Barbara “Bobby” Klau of West Hartford, and Wallace and Cecily Feldman of Brookline, MA and Delray Beach, FL, an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins, and innumerable friends she made in her travels across the continent and, occasionally, in jail. Her beloved dog Ani, a Husky-Akita who rarely left her side in their four years together, will be adopted by Ari. A private graveside funeral for family members will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2021. In remembrance of Miri’s compassion for the homeless, donations may be made in her name to My Sisters’ Place (sistersplacect.org). I only met Miriam once, but it was not a forgettable experience. She was full of life and character all her own. To Ari and Etan- we were only ever distantly acquainted, but being the younger sibling of someone who has struggled with addiction for years, my heart goes out to you guys. Not only is it something nobody should ever go through themselves, but it's something nobody should ever have to watch a loved one go through. My thoughts are with you and your family- I am so sorry for your loss.

Dan, Dr. Klau, and family: My deepest condolences on the passing of your daughter. Though I did not know Miriam, her obituary touched my heart -- and, knowing Dan's musical talent and humor, the descripition of her artistic flair and passion makes me think that her apple did not fall far from the tree. As the Welsh saying goes, for every wound the ointment of time. May your memories and love remain as your pain slowly eases. Dan Krisch

Dear David and Bobby and Miri's entire family,
We pray for strength for all of you to deal with this terrible sadness and hope that someday the good memories will overtake the sad. This beautiful young woman had so much to give to the world and the world was cheated of her beauty and talents and loving personality by illness and addiction that plagues so many in todays world. Our prayers are with you.

Dear Doctor and Judge Klau,
I wish I could start this by saying there's no possible way that I could know how you feel, however I do, because I lost my daughter two years ago to the same disease.
And of course Your Honor probably knows that I've struggled with my own addiction to alcohol for years. I've been sober for 11 years now. I am very fortunate to have the love of family, friends, and of course AA.
Some like myself are lucky to survive some like our children are not. No matter how many times you try to help or how many things you tried to do, sometimes it's just not enough. And please, if you struggle with any guilt at all, let that go because this is not your fault. I'm just getting to the point of realizing that regarding my child.
I will have caring thoughts for both of you, and if you need to talk, you know how to find me.

Dear Klaus, My heart goes out to all of you. While I never had the pleasure of knowing Miri, I am honored to know her wonderful dad, her (paternal) aunts and uncles, and her grandparents. I can tell from her lovingly crafted obituary how Miri was the beneficiary
of much talent, passion, and love that was obviously transmitted to her. Her beautiful essence shines through in your words, and I am touched also by the strength and courage in acknowledging (rather than avoiding or sugar-coating) the reality of your own painful journey with her. What a gift your full humanness was to Miri and will continue to be to everyone you encounter. When we lost my niece a few years ago under similar circumstances, I remembered my grandmother's expression, "Mensch tracht and Gut lacht." (Man plans and God laughs) As you struggle through the incomprehensibility and injustice of it all, may you be comforted by sweet memories of Miri and by the love and support of the many people whose lives you have touched,
including me. Love, Steve

My heart breaks for you and yours especially since we have lived through a daughter with a heroin addiction. Losing a child is the loneliest, most desolate journey a parent can take, we are with you in this heart wrenching times.
I have such fond memories of Miriam, I always saw a beautiful human in her, one with depth and sincerity. I remember when her class took on a daily project of drawing character pictures of me in cartoon form, example laughy taffy jaffee, or any absurd thing especially about my love of coffee. Miraim was a key player and submitted many pictures to the collection. She was a free spirit and her inner beauty shone out to all who took the time to see. I know that Miraim was in my daughter Peninah's class and they had just spoken a little while ago.
I personally know that it is easy to blame "us" however, I say don't as it benefits no one especially since I have heard over the years about your families efforts and dedication to help Miriam.
Our heart and souls are with you, she was a sweetie and pure soul.
please reach out if you can.

The photo of your beautiful daughter prompted me to read her obituary today. Her story hit me hard. My heart hurts just thinking about the pain you and your family must be enduring right now. I applaud you for sharing the very difficult journey you have been through with her.... and bringing to light the plight of addiction.
I feel both your anguish and your love for her.......it certainly isn’t the path most parents would ever even imagine for a child. While your dear Miri is now at peace.....I will pray for you and your family.
