Robert

(M.)

Greenstein

Obituary

Dr. Robert M. Greenstein, 80 years of age, of Avon, CT, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Arlene (Rosenberg) Greenstein. Born in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Nathan and Sara (Gold) Greenstein. Dr. Greenstein had a hand in virtually everything that influenced the current and future health of Genetics in the State of Connecticut and beyond: caring for patients, supervising genetic counselors, training residents and fellows, supporting the cytogenetics and molecular laboratories, managing and leading programs and grants, lobbying the state legislature, working with the newborn screening lab, and serving within local support groups. He dedicated his career to delivering compassionate care to individuals and families affected by genetic conditions, teaching and training the next generation(s) of medical geneticists, and enthusiastically bringing the power of genetic and genomic knowledge to the public. His formal medical training started at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. While completing his internship and residency in Pediatrics at the Bronx Municipal Hospital Center in New York, he honed his cytogenetics skills working part time in Dr. Harold Klinger’s laboratory at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His dedication to formal and informal “service” included a position as Captain in the US Air Force as Chief of Pediatrics at Chanute Air Force Base in Illinois. Following this, he realigned himself toward his interest in growing field of Medical Genetics, completing a post-doctoral fellowship in Human Genetics and Birth Defects in the Department of Pediatrics at Stanford University. His 45 year career in Genetics at the University of Connecticut began when Dr. Milton Markowitz, the first Chairman of the fledgling Department of Pediatrics, recruited him to build a Genetics Division. During his career at UConn, his roles included director of the cytogenetics lab and genetic counseling services, pediatrics residency director, associate and acting Chairman, and director of the Medical Genetics Residency program. He was involved in teaching the Human Genetics course for UConn Medical students and made opportunities for learning in his clinics available to any interested student. A fierce advocate for individuals with disabilities, he was involved for many years with the Connecticut Down Syndrome Congress. A Greenstein scholarship was awarded to students pursuing a postgraduate degree in a field that will benefit individuals with Down syndrome. On April 29, 2009, as he transitioned toward retirement, his legacy was honored by M. Jodi Rell, the Governor of the State of Connecticut, who proclaimed that day Dr. Robert Greenstein Day. Despite his unfortunate passing, Dr. Greenstein’s passion for genetics and its future remains strong, as does his legacy. Dr. Greenstein was known by family, friends and colleagues for his humor, humility, work ethic, compassion, optimism and empathy. An avid fly fisherman, Dr. Greenstein spent countless hours fishing along the Farmington River, Canada and the Bahamas. Dr. Greenstein was also an accomplished tennis player, regularly winning numerous tennis tournaments at the Farmington Valley Racket Club when he was in his prime. In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his daughter Suzanne Greenstein of West Hartford, CT; his son, Daniel M Greenstein and his daughter in-law Heather (Smith) Greenstein of West Hartford, CT; his sister, Nancy Batterman of Scarsdale, NY and his two beloved grandchildren, Maxwell and Mazie Greenstein.

A Memorial service will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, August 3, 2018 in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, CT with Rabbi Rebekah Mag-Goldman officiating. Dr. Greenstein’s family will be receiving guests at 10:30am. A luncheon will take place immediately following the service, with the location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Down Syndrome Association of Connecticut (www.mydsact.org/donate/). Approximately 30 years ago it was my great honor and good fortune that Bob Greenstein became part of my life. Although due to my wanderlust and travels I didn’t spend as much time with him as I now wish his words actions and the man he was greatly influenced me. I listened and watched as he taught me what a good man is. He was a man of infinite patience, a warm and consistent demeanor and care for all who crossed his path. My favorite thoughts are of his quick wit. I believe a person that can make others smile is truly gifted. I had many laughs with Bob and I’m grateful for that. I did not know the incredible breadt of his work and the changes he brought to the world but I am not surprised. He was a very humble and quiet man who was an incredible listener and never missed a beat. I believe that energy travels and we are meant to pass that on. The energy he gave to all who knew him is immense and will live on for millennia. I will miss you Bob but I will strive to continue practicing the lessons you taught me. Peace!!!

We just want the family of Dr. Bob to know the impact he had on our lives, and particularly that of our daughter, Dana Pech. She was born in 1979, 6 weeks premature, one of 2 births in the same week with PKU. As young first-time parents, we were terrified, particularly since I had grown up with a girl with untreated PKU, and had seen the tragic result. Bob held our hands, reassured us over and over that treatment was available, and told us not to worry. We worked with him in the legislature to get insurance coverage for PKU an other metabolic conditions. With us, he watched our tiny baby grow into a beautiful and talented woman, now with her own child. He was so much more than Dana's doctor. We will never forget his kind and generous heart.

For over 25 years, I had the privilège and pleasure of serving with Bob on CT's Genetics Advisory Committee, which advises the Connecticut Health Department on its program for screening newborns for inherited metabolic and hormonal disorders.. He was the epitome of the compassionate and knowledgeable physician-scientist we all strive to be and a wonderful colleague..

Dr. Greenstein’s legacy will live on through all the physicians like myself whom he trained not just in the science of medicine, but in the humanity of our profession. It was a high honor to learn from a physician of Bob’s caliber who had that rare combination of brilliant clinical skills coupled with an inate understanding of the psychosocial needs of the patients and their families. Dr. Greenstrein served as as a role model to many of us and I am eternally grateful to him. May God bless Dr. Greenstein and his family.

I began my pediatric residency at UCONN in 1983 and had the pleasure of benefitting from Bob’s kindness and wisdom until his retirement. He was the model physician - kind to both patients and colleagues, loved by all, always willing to offer his tremendous knowledge and , perhaps, most importantly, guidance to those of us in need of his judgment and wisdom. His passing is a true loss to the pediatrics community. He is irreplaceable. I am proud to have been able to know him. My condolences to all. Carrie Streim, M.D.

The world ?? just lost a physician in every sense of the word... his diagnostic skills were unsurpassed ....there are no words to express my sadness... but at the same time I can't help but express the gratitude and admiration I have for Dr.Robert Greenstein... I remember the day like it was yesterday when he hired me 25 years ago...here's how it went "please to me you" I shook his hands...he said "I heard a lot about you, do you want 2 weeks vacation? I said yes...do you like kids? Yes...I can only pay you $11.00/hr...but a lot of joy and free knowledge and hard work.... I said sounds like a dream job... he said yep ?? and you are hired ... It was the best job I ever had ... so many amazing stories and memories... too many to list .... Dr. Robert Greenstein you are now in the heavens and night skies as one of the finest and brightest star up there...guiding and teaching us from beyond for all eternity God bless my friend and teacher of knowledge

I had the opportunity to work with Bob during the mid 1970's at a time we were establishing many clinical services for children and adolescents. Ever the knowledgeable and caring physician in his field of expertise he always welcomed the input of other clinicians and families in building quality service systems. He was a very supportive friend to those with whom he worked.

I only met Doctor Greenstein two months ago, however I was struck by his warm eyes and his big heart. I still recall our first conversation: After I told him that I was specialized in pediatric osteopathy in Germany, he told me that he worked with Down Syndrome children at UConn and was specialized in pediatrics as well as genetics. Our conversation was brief, but he really touched me by his kindness and determination to connect. I was very saddened to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences to his family.

In 1979, only pure joy could describe the feeling of having my first child born a girl. Three days later I was hit with, what to me was, devastating news. My sweet baby girl had a genetic defect that, without being properly treated, could cause severe brain damage. Dr. Greenstein became my rock, my support, my medical encyclopedia, and my friend. Throughout the years he and (because of his skilled leadership) his fabulous team, showed true compassion, commitment to both patient and family, kindness and a willingness to walk the difficult path right alongside you. They worked extremely long hours and always maintained a sense of humor. Because of Dr. Greenstein and his team, my daughter, now aged 39, is a happy and healthy mother of perfectly healthy five-year-old twins. None of this could’ve happened without Dr. Greenstein. Thank you Bob, we were absolutely blessed to have you in our lives. Rest in eternal peace.

Dan,
So sorry to hear. Our thoughts are with you. He was a towering figure in oyr neighborhood. I recall once dping a book report having to do with genetics. I was young. Middle school maybe. I went over into the office in the house. I cant recall any of the complex stuff he knew. But i remember so vividly how gracious he was with his time, how patient he was explaining and how kind he was about explaining it all. There was something so vivid and yet obtuse about the memory but it stayed with me. He was grace and brilliance personified to me as a young child and i think it was reflected in his kids. Or at least the one i knew. Best, Pete Kolp
