Robert Leroy Seaman, a resident of Sarasota, FL, and long time resident of Lexington, MA, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2012 in Sarasota. He is survived by Jacqueline Bailey of West Hartford, his wife of 63 years. The oldest son of LeRoy and Alice Seaman of Syracuse, NY, Robert grew up with a great appreciation for family, education, and doing everything to the best of his ability. Robert enlisted in the United States Navy at age 18 and served as a decorated naval aviator in the Pacific theater throughout World War II. Upon his honorable discharge, he enrolled in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY. While at RPI he met his future wife, who was then pursuing her degree at Russell Sage. To support their new marriage, Robert drove a Pepsi truck during school vacations. He first worked with Ford Motor Company and CBS before joining Raytheon in Lexington, MA. Robert went back to school at age 43, earning his MBA from the Sloane School at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He retired from his position as a senior executive at Raytheon in 1989 and moved to Florida year-round in 1993. Robert loved playing cribbage and never missed an opportunity to enjoy big band music. He recently danced around the house with Jackie to the music of Jimmy Dorsey. An avid reader as well as a lifelong audiophile, Robert traveled extensively, listened to opera, and always relished time with his family and friends, starting each evening with a “dab” of scotch. In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by two sons, David, and his wife Monica, of Rocky Mount, NC, and Richard, and his wife Liza, of Claremont, NH. He will be missed by his grandchildren Jason, Katie, Jared, Callie, Jamie, Dan, Zach, Angelika, and Sydney. He was predeceased by his eldest son, Peter, for whom he established a memorial scholarship at RPI.
A graveside ceremony will be held Tuesday, May 1, at 11 a.m. in Emanuel Cemetery, 1360 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Robert’s memory may be made to the Peter Bailey Seaman ’73 Memorial Scholarship, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 110 Eighth Street, Troy, NY, 12180.
