Dr. Robert S. Sultar, 76, of Sanibel Island, FL and New Britain, died on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at New Britain General Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. He not only interned and did his residency at this very same hospital, but went on to have a 37 year relationship with it, throughout his years of private practice of internal medicine in Kensington. He will be remembered as a caring and skilled physician, hearkening back to a time when doctors still made both housecalls and daily rounds in the hospital. Fans of Berlin High School football may recall his presence at games as team physician. At various times, he served as physician in Berlin for the school system, for the police and for the fire department. He was also Medical Director at Ledgecrest Nursing Home. He was active in a number of civic organizations, including Kiwanis, both in central Connecticut and in Sanibel Island, FL. He had a lifelong passion for competitive tennis, serving as captain of his team at Hobart College, and with many trophies to show for his efforts in tournaments at The Farms Country Club in Wallingford, The Country Club of Farmington and The Dunes Country Club of Sanibel Island. He also played in tournaments throughout New England, earning a ranking in the United States Tennis Association. He loved golf as well, and enjoyed competing (and winning) tournaments in many of the same settings where he played tennis. He was an accomplished classical pianist, and a composer with five copyrighted songs. Upon retirement, he spent winters in Sanibel Island, FL, where he loved walking the beach. Year-round he was an avid walker, usually covering several miles three times a day. He also loved travel, including two four-month cruises around the world, in 2007 and 2008. Born in Queens, NY, he was the son of the late Sam and Ruth (Paymer) Sultar. In addition to Hobart, he was graduated from SUNY-Downstate Medical School. He leaves his beloved wife of 28 years, Sandra (Sasiela) Sultar; his daughter Stephanie Scott of Ventura, CA; his son Jeff and his wife Julia Bell of Philadelphia, PA; his son Ken and his wife Alanna (Steinberg) of South Windsor; his step-sons Peter Cloutier of New Britain and Patrick Cloutier of Hartford; his step-daughter Nina (Cloutier) Prims of Runnemede, NJ; and three grandchildren who were the loves of his life: Evan Prims and her husband Philip of Runnemede, Maya Sultar of Philadelphia, and Zack Sultar of South Windsor. He was predeceased by his son Scott. Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 23 at 1:30 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford.
