Rosalie

(Lassman)

Rosenthal

Obituary

Rosalie (Lassman) Rosenthal, 88, of West Hartford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Thursday, August 1, 2013, at Saint Francis Hospital. She was the beloved wife of the late Elias (Elliot/”Kiki”) Rosenthal for 51 years. A native of Hartford, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Anna (Seltzer) Lassman. Rosalie attended Weaver High School and was a graduate of the University of Connecticut in 1945. She was an elementary school teacher in the Hartford Public School system. Rosalie had a deep social consciousness and passion for human rights and fairness and supported a number of related causes. She was a lifelong learner and relished a variety of educational opportunities, including post-graduate courses in history and the arts, politics, and computers. She deeply valued and enjoyed her participation in monthly book groups and Torah studies, and was an avid bridge player. She loved the outdoors, cross-country skiing, and playing tennis. She was blessed to have a wonderful circle of loving friends, with whom she shared many happy memories. Rosalie was an incredible homemaker and loved welcoming family and friends into her home. Rosalie’s greatest joy was being a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her three children: Stephen M. Rosenthal, MD, of San Francisco, CA, Robert B. Rosenthal, MD, and his partner Alison Uuereb of Middletown, CA, and Melanie Rosenthal Goodwin and her partner, George Berka, of New Haven, CT. In addition, she leaves her granddaughter, Greta LeAnn Rosenthal, of Middletown CA; her sister, Evelyn Wish, and her brother, M. Nathan Lassman, MD, and his wife, Pamela, all of West Hartford, and her sister-in-law, Janet Lassman of South Windsor. She was pre-deceased by her brother, Edwin A. Lassman, Esq. and her brother-in-law, Martin Wish. She was also loved by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to gratefully acknowledge her extraordinary caregivers: Jasmine, Icyline, and Sharlene.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Sunday, August 4, 2013, at Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford, with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in the Piaterer Verein Society Cemetery, Jordan Lane Ext., Wethersfield. Following interment, a memorial will be observed Sunday at her home, 42 Ranger Lane, West Hartford until 4:30 PM, and from 7:00-9:00 PM with a service at 7:30 PM. IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, memorial contributions may be made to: Hebrew Healthcare, 1 Abrahms Blvd., West Hartford, CT, 06117; Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Ave., West Hartford, CT, 06117, Connecticut Fund for the Environment, 142 Temple St., 3rd Floor, New Haven, CT, 06510, or Special Olympics, 2666 State Street, Hamden, CT, 06517. Rosalie welcomed me into her home and family with open arms and heart. She loved her grand baby Greta deeply and looked forward to our visits and phone calls greatly. Truly a remarkable woman that will be missed by many. Greta and I are sorry we can't attend the services but we are thinking about family and friends today.

Rosalie will always be remembered in our hearts as a caring, loving person. We are so happy we were able to meet and share fond memories of Rob and Alison, and what joy Granddaughter Greta has brought to our lives! Rosalie's wisdom, wit, and also knowing the right thing to say will be sorely missed. We are deeply grateful for the love and wisdom bestowed to our daughter Alison.
God's Blessings,
Al and Janice Uuereb

Obituaries are often full of understatement. Rosalie had a passion for human rights and fairness, and she fought for these values and supported them all her life.

Dear Nate, Pam, Andrew and Family, and Evelyn and Family,
We were so sorry to learn of Rosalie's passing this week. An era is truly coming to an end. We know that as well as being Nate's big sister, she was like a second mother to him. It sounds like so many memories were created over the years it was hard to choose just a few in his eulogy. We know her loss will be hard to get over, and we want you to know that our thoughts are with all of you during this difficult time. Love, Lois and Bob Dwartz
