Rose (Rosen) Worgaftik, of Avon, formerly of Newington and Delray Beach, FL, passed away on December 29, 2009 in Avon, at the age of 91. She was born February 18, 1918 in New York, NY, one of four sisters, Lillian and Frieda, both deceased, and Gertrude, presently residing in Waltham, MA. She married Alex Worgaftik on September 23, 1941. After Alex’s return from World War II duty in India, and the birth of their first child, the family moved from new York to Hartford in 1947. After the birth of their fourth child, they moved to Newington where they resided until Alex’s death in 1979. Rose worked as a bookkeeper for Mark Supply Company of Hartford until her retirement in 1980. She and Alex were among the founders of Congregation B’nai Sholom in Newington where she was active in the choir, Women’s Club, and the many amateur musicals that the Synagogue sponsored. She carried that enthusiasm for music, dance, and fun to Delray Beach, FL, where she performed in similar productions at the Pines of Delray, North. She was an avid golfer and bowler and enjoyed playing bridge and mahjong. In Florida, she became an active member of the League of Women Voters, serving as treasurer of her chapter for several years. She participated in a wide variety of league events and was especially active in encouraging young people to register to vote. She is survived by her sister Gertrude of Waltham, MA. She leaves a daughter, Susan, of Greenfield, MA; three sons: Gerald of Hollywood, FL; Robert and daughter-in-law Brigitte of Avon; and Mark and daughter-in-law Lucy Pope of Wellfleet, MA. She also leaves four grandchildren: Alex of San Francisco, CA; Paul and Ian of Avon, CT; and Gabriel of Wellfleet, MA. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 31, 2009 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave., Hartford with Rabbi James Rosen officiating. Interment will follow in Congregation B’nai Sholom Memorial Park, Jordan Lane Ext., Wethersfield.
