Sam Leibin, a 57 year resident of the Greater Hartford Area died on Wednesday, September 6, 2007 at the Hebrew Home, & Hospital in West Hartford. He was 92. Son of Isador and Bertha Leibin, he was born Nov. 9, 1914 and grew up in Manhattan and the Bronx, attending Stuyvesant High School, a school that specializes in math and science in lower Manhattan, where he won the class medal as the top math student, graduating in1932. Sam won a scholarship to Cooper Union in Manhattan for electrical engineering, but stopped after one year during the Great Depression to work and help support his family. He moved to Waterbury, CT in the early 1940?s, where he met and married Helen Blumenfeld in 1943 and with whom he shared a wonderful 55 year marriage. From 1943-1946 Sam served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines and in 1950 moved with Helen to live and work in East Hartford and to found Town Hall Hardware on Main Street. Sam and Helen owned and operated the store for over 40 years before retiring in the early 1990?s. After Helen?s death in 1998, Sam lived in Rockville, MD with sister-in-law, Sylvia Krasow until moving back to Connecticut in 2003 and then living in the Hebrew Home for over 3 years. At the Hebrew Home he was blessed with the friendship of Rosyln Theodore and Dr. Morris Nathan and the wonderful care of Dr. Emre Notroglu and the nursing staff, as well as the guidance of family friend Dr. Keshav Rao. Sam loved being of service in both his business and personal life and his positive attitude and ?how can I help you? approach to life will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his sons and their wives: Harvey & Florence Leibin of Avon; Ivan & Nora Leibin; and Steven & Donna Leibin both of W. Hartford; his beloved grandchildren: Brad; Kate and her husband Andrew Matos; Kara; Emily; Michael; Rachel; and Isaiah; as well as a brother Jay and wife, Dotty Leibin in Lauder Lakes , FL. Funeral services will be held TODAY, Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of the Weinstein Mortuary, 640 Farmington Ave. Hartford with interment following in the Beth El Temple Cemetery, Avon. A memorial period will be observed at the home of Harvey & Florence Leibin in Avon, Thursday, following the funeral thru Sunday evening.
